At the confluence of the Big Thompson River and Fern Falls is a bridge which marks the place of The Pool. This is not a spectacular formation, as many rivers form such pools from the action of swirling water. In this case, the water rushes through a narrow gap of stone which caused the formation of a pool.
This was so named by a group of boys on an 1889 biological expedition in Moraine Park. One of the members, Frederick Funston (later a distinguished General in the Spanish-American War), fell into this pool, frightened by a bear claimed the boys. It was then named Funston Pool. In 1932 , it was officially shortened to The Pool. #
